What to See and Do in San Francisco with Kids

December 15, 2015

Traveling with your children to San Francisco can be lots of fun. San Francisco is a small city, yet boasts many different fun activities for children and adults alike. Children will be entertained by street performers which are plentiful in the area. There is plenty of shopping available, as well as Golden Gate Park, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, and the Wax Museum.

* One of the most popular attractions in San Francisco is the Golden Gate Park. Not to be confused with an ordinary park, Golden Gate Park offers two museums, a Japanese Tea Garden, a children’s playground and several man-made and natural lakes.

Each of the museums offers different exhibits. The California Academy of Sciences offers educational tours and exhibits on all living life from marine mammals to rainforest creatures. A planetarium is also available for an additional fee. The De Young Museum focuses on artwork that is not on display at any other location. For lunch, you can have a picnic on the park grounds. Several trails are also available for climbing and viewing the sites from above.

* Fisherman’s Wharf is a great area to visit as well. Children can explore submarines and view old World War II ships. From Pier 39 many trips can be taken, including one to Alcatraz Island that is only recommended for older children as the trip can be quite long.

Bay cruises can be taken as well, for families to enjoy the view of San Francisco from the water. Along Fisherman’s Wharf is the famous Wax Museum which offers life-like wax replicas of many famous people and those only famous to San Francisco, as well as a replica of King Tut’s tomb. You can also enjoy tours of a long-standing family bakery and many outside eateries.

* If you have children who enjoy odd or weird encounters, a visit to Ripley’s Believe It or Not will be very entertaining. Ripley’s Believe It or Not offers many attractions which they claim offer “facts that are stranger than fiction.” Ripley’s Museum showcases a cat with bionic legs that grew through the skin after a dramatic rescue attempt, a spaceship build out of matchsticks, a mirror maze and a large candy factory. With all of these attractions and more, you and your children are bound to have a blast!

Traveling in San Francisco with your children, there are many attractions for the entire family to enjoy. Take a visit to the Golden State Park where the attractions are endless, or take a stroll on Fisherman’s Wharf and view the many attractions and tours. Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum offers an odd view into art and life. In addition, there are several shopping districts in which you can have fun as a family and visit some local eateries. There is a ton of fun to be had in San Francisco.
