How to Make Your Own Magazine Holders
Many families around the country have one or more subscriptions to magazines. While you probably don’t want to keep every magazine that enters your home, there may be some you don’t want to throw away. You may not know where to keep these, so learning how to make your own magazine holders could come in handy.
While it’s true you can purchase magazine holders at any office supply store, why not take advantage of items you have around your home? You can make magazine holders out of items you’d normally throw away, namely cereal boxes. Here are the supplies you’ll need:
* Empty cereal boxes
* Craft knife or box cutter
* Contact paper or spray paint to cover the box
Begin by cutting the flaps from the empty cereal box. Then measure down four inches from the top of the box along one side. Using the ruler, draw a line from that point diagonally to the top corner of the opposite side. You’ll end up creating a triangle shape. Repeat this step on the other side of the box.
Carefully use the craft knife or box cutter and cut along the lines so you’ve cut a triangle from the box. This will create the opening where you’ll place your magazines. Repeat these steps for each of the magazine holders you’re making.
Next you can either spray paint the box a solid color or use contact paper to cover the cereal boxes. If you spray paint the boxes, be sure to paint them in a well-ventilated area. Then you’ll want them to dry thoroughly before adding any magazines.
The benefit of using contact paper over spray paint is that the surface is washable. Contact paper can be found in a variety of colors and styles. It’s also relatively inexpensive and can be found in most discount stores.
Lay the contact paper on a flat surface, upside down. Put the box on the contact paper and draw the different panels you’ll need. Starting with the box on one side, draw a line. Turn the box on its side and along the line, draw another line. Then place the box on the other side so you can get the entire box covered with as few pieces as possible.
Be sure to leave a little extra over the amount you’ll need around the cut edges of the box. This will give the box a finished look. It will also protect those areas where the box may be weakened by taking magazines out and replacing them.
Remove a small amount of the backing and line it up against the box. Slowly peel a little at a time and apply it to the box until the entire box is covered. When you’re done you’ll have your own, unique magazine holders.
