The book is divided into eight (8) larger categories and then further broken down into smaller groups:
- The Middle East,
- Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands
- Latin America
- The Caribbean, The Bahamas, and Bermuda
One of my favorite quotes, that I believe succinctly gives the author’s purpose in compiling this list, is in the introduction. Speaking about a recent trip taken by her nieces, Patricia Schultz says:
“…and I can feel their excitement and their sense of wonder. They will return home exhilarated, having felt firsthand how travel opens up your whole world while nurturing a newfound appreciation for everything you’ve left behind.”
It was fun to go through the book to note all of the places that I had already visited in my limited amount of travel as an adult. My list of places that could be checked off was small, but my wish list would satisfy the wanderlust in the most seasoned traveler.
I was initially disappointed by the pictures in 1,000 Places to See Before You Die. When I opened the book for the first time, I wanted to feel like I was about to see a picture of my next vacation spot. The need to conserve space when publishing a book of 1,000 places is understandable, but I wanted to get lost in each destination. I know some have made negative comments about the size of the book, but for me it would have been preferable that the book be a larger size, similar to a coffee table book. The author then would have have the ability to add a more extensive library of pictures.
What actually changed my mind and made me reconsider the book was the iPad app by the wonderfactory at 1000Places.com. The app was available for $3.99 and once I downloaded and installed it, I found the pictures I had been longing for in the book. Scrolling through the pictures offers you the chance to see gorgeous, tantalizing vacation destinations and I could then use my book as a reference to read about each location.
Last week I got to spend a some what relaxing week on vacation with extended family. 1,000 Places to See Before You Die was one of the few books deemed worthy enough to be carried along in my summer reading bag.
